La La Land, Lion lead 2017 Oscar nominations

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in!

La La Land is up for a huge 14 awards, matching the record for most nominations ever set by All About Eve and Titanic.

Stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are in the running for Best Actress and Best Actor.

Representing Australia, Nicole Kidman is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Lion, with the film being named in a further five categories.

Mel Gibson, meanwhile, will battle it out in the Best Director category for his work on World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge.

It's been a good week for Mel, who recently became a father for the ninth time after welcoming baby son Lars.

Diversity, a much-discussed issue after last year's #OscarsSoWhite controversy, appears to have improved, with the likes of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis nominated for their turn in Fences.
