Key Trends for Autumn and Winter

Westfield National Stylist Madelin Tomelty gives us her tips on the must-have pieces

What are some of the key colour trends for Autumn Winter?

The stand-out colour of autumn/winter is red. Coming into winter, people will also start to see a lot of deep jewel tones popping up in many designers’ new collections. Think emerald greens, deep burgundy and reds (of course), and popping cobalt blue.

If there was one item you need to keep up with the new season trends, what would it be?

A pair of statement pants! This is a fun trend that has been around for a few seasons already in its summery, floral variety, and in 2013 we are seeing even more takes on the hero pant. Try choosing a pant that ticks another trend box, such as baroque, opulence or winter floral prints.

What’s an easy way to update your wardrobe to keep up to trend with this season’s new looks?

A nice, easy way to incorporate this season’s trends is through accessories. You can find shoes, bags and costume jewellery that won’t break the bank which means you can get a few items instead of just the one and vary which pieces you team back with your outfits. This season, metallics and embellishment are great ones to add into your wardrobe through accessories. Scorching scarlet is another good one to easily inject into your outfit – it’s as easy as simply adding a red lipstick to your beauty regime!

Any advice on how to make your summer wardrobe work for the colder months too?

Winter is all about layering, so if you have a few items in your summer wardrobe that you can’t bear to part with, it’s easy to keep them on your autumn/winter outfit rotation. Love that silk dress? Add a pair of opaque tights, some ankle boots and a leather jacket. Want to wear your red cami because it is bang on-trend (half your luck)? Throw on your jeans and add a cardi, oversized/cocoon coat and a chunky knit scarf.

What do you suggest accessory wise to update a jacket or look from last season?

Simply add trendy accessories to older pieces to keep your look of–the-moment. Metallic and detailed boots and ballet flats are coming through big time, and big, baroque-inspired statement jewellery pieces such as necklaces in gold, bronze, silver and rose gold are here to stay. New-season belts are also great for updating your outfit.

What about textures?

It’s all about lace and leather this season with the romantic/gothic look at the forefront of the season’s trends. You’ll see these two fabrics in everything from blouses to dresses and jackets, and by all means go out and buy something leather and something lace and wear them together! The darker hues like black, navy and burgundy work best for this look- it’s feminine, sexy and edgy.

What celebrity has got great autumn winter style?

I think Olivia Palermo can do no wrong. She knows how to work every look from street-casual to red carpet in nobody’s style but her own. She always looks current but never trend-obsessed, which gets a big tick from me! She encapsulates effortless glamour.
