Keith Urban reveals his marriage to Nicole Kidman was a "learning curve" when it came to dealing with emotional conflict.
The country music star told the music website HITS that the lyrics to his new release, The Fighter, are straight from his relationship with Nicole Kidman.
"I know he hurt you, made you scared of love, too scared to love," the song begins, possibly in reference to one of Nicole's past relationships. "...It's gonna take just a little time, but you're gonna see that I was born to love you."
Keith admits these lines were inspired by early on in his relationship with "Nic".
"A lot of those really simple, tough lines in 'The Fighter' are straight from early in my relationship with Nic," he said. "I had such a learning curve in our marriage! When she’d get scared, I’d think she was angry; then I’d get defensive, go tearing out the driveway at 90 miles an hour.
"And that’s when it all gets pear-shaped. What she needs, and it’s all in the song, is for me to stay, to be close, to hear her."
Nicole has seconded this sentiment, telling the Telegraph last year: "We didn't really know each other – we got to know each other during our marriage."
Nicole and Keith started dating in 2005, four years after her high-profile marriage to Tom Cruise ended in divorce.
They were married in 2006, and have since welcomed to daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
Since those early days, it seems the pair have only gone from strength to strength, even inspiring Keith's latest album title 'Get Closer'.
"The album title alone was literally from this new awareness I had with this reality of how to react [to conflict in relationships]. When things are tough or upsetting, it’s about pulling her close. That’s what she needs, and I had to learn it," Keith admitted.
Oh, you guys!
