How to Have an A-list Wedding

Many brides flick through magazines, stare at images of celebrity weddings and think, ‘If only I could marry someone famous.’ For wedding planner Anthony Del Col from Staging Connections, that means a whole lot of torn out pictures and brides begging for a real-life duplicate. “I’ve had many brides show me snaps of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise,” he says. “The idea of having a wedding in a castle in Italy with romantic candles and flowers is a dream for many girls.” The good news is you can organise a celebrity-style, A-list wedding. Here’s how:

A common question you’ll get when engaged is, ‘How is the wedding planning going?’ But who’s to say you need to give them an hour-long run down on everything you’ve organised thus far? “Keep the details secret,” says Anthony. The less you tell them, the more intrigued they’ll be – not to mention the wow factor they’ll get on the actual day!

Tom and Katie wanted a romantic, epic feel to their wedding day and with the historic Italian castle and fireworks display, they definitely achieved that. “Theme your wedding,” suggests Anthony. Think about the things you and your groom love. Are you both romantic? Laid back? Party animals? Bollywood lovers? Stick to this theme throughout – from the location down to the wedding invites and table arrangements.

“Choose a location none of your guests have been to for a wedding,” says Anthony. Going somewhere new will excite your guests, and you’ll probably start a trend of your own! Continue this theme with other decorative elements at the church and reception.

So many people have a set time schedule for how things should pan out during a wedding reception – the bridal party enters before entrées are served, the bridal waltz is done after the speeches, and so on. Mixing it up can be fun! “Cut your cake as soon as you walk into the reception,” says Anthony. “Or kick off the dancing as soon as you arrive. It’s your day. Do it how you like!”

Keep up to date with what’s “in” and what’s “out” by flicking through wedding magazines. “Celebrity brides are opting for a unique style for their bridesmaids,” says Anthony. “They’re giving each person a style to suit their shape.” Entertainment such as dancers or singers is also popular.

While it’s okay for celebrities with deep pockets to splurge on hundreds of dollars worth of designer candles, it’s not as easy for everyone else. But there is an easy way out. Instead of going for the big brands, opt for cheaper alternatives that look the same. This goes for candles, table arrangements, bonbonniere, everything! You’ll get the same feel you want, and no one will notice the difference. Okay, maybe picky Aunty May… but who really cares about her!?
