How to Find the Perfect Swimwear this Summer!

One swimsuit does not fit all. Literally. Here is the ultimate guide to finding the right fabric and fit for you this summer!

Swimwear along with jeans, can seem like the most daunting and horrible thing in the world to shop for. To eliminate the stress, we've come up with a few simple tips that will have you heading towards the most flattering styles and fabrics.

  • Choose quality fabrics: The future of swimwear fabric is now, and it’s Neoprene. Traditionally a wetsuit material, Neoprene is now creating major waves in swimwear. “It’s a great fabric that’s a little heavier weight so it forgives a few more sins!” notes Caroline Allen, Big W Swim and Activewear Buyer. Also a staple fabric for Triangl Swimwear, founder Erin Deering explains that although Neoprene seems tougher than traditional lycra,  it actually requires more care. “We recommend rinsing the bikinis after contact with chlorine and salt water and keep the bikini drying flat, in the shade."
  • Cover Up: Don’t want to show too much skin? Kaftan and playsuits offer the coverage so many women want, without covering up your cossie too much.  “Just remember when wearing sheer shirts or kaftans, sun cream underneath is really important as you can still burn,” Caroline highlights.
  • Be Aware Online: When buying online, don’t get lazy, urges Erin. “We sell online only, for the exact reason that we don’t love the whole process of shopping for swimwear in a store. Bad lighting, intimidating salespeople, no mirror in change room, no sizes in a store!,” she laments. When shopping online, Erin recommends asking as many questions as possible including any queries about sizing, fit, fabric and wearability. Being able to access 24/7 chat and email support as well as a return/exchange policy is also imperative to ensure you aren't disappointed when it's delivered to your door.
  • Take Your Good Mood Shopping: Because god knows, you may be in a bad one when you leave!  “Swimwear shopping is not a great experience for all of us,” notes Louise Bond, founder and creative director of Bikini Atoll. “Also, be open minded to what the sales assistants recommend – what you think you might like may not always suit you!” she says.
  • Shop For Your shape: “Make sure the cut of any piece you buy suits your figure not necessarily the fashion,” advises Caroline.
  • Ignore Sizes:  “Don’t worry about the size on the tag, worry about how it fits on you!” encourages Erin. “If you’re usually an extra small but the medium fits better - take the medium and don’t even think about it again!” The only area this doesn’t apply is in the cup size, this must be spot on or your top can go south at the first chance

  • Have Fun With Fuschia (and beyond): Swimsuits are a great option for getting your print and right pops of colour on! “Prints have been around for quite a few swim seasons and just keep getting better. This season think bright and detailed all the way through to neon,” suggests Caroline.
  • Remember, There Are Plenty Of Swimsuits In The Sea: “Don’t be at war with your body! If the bikini doesn’t suit you, it’s not because you don’t have a good body or don’t have a nice shape - it means the bikini is wrong! Ditch it, and find something else!” says Erin.
  • Check Returns Policies Prior To Purchase:  “No matter how many times you may have bought that style or shape, each swimsuit differs so you need to make sure it still fits,” cautions Caroline.
  • Comfort Before Cuteness: You’re going to be wearing that swimsuit a lot in public, so move around a bit in the dressing room. Throw in some star jumps and awkward ‘flailing in the surf’ motions. Still sitting pretty? It’s sold! Caroline suggests a far more logic approach:  “Once you’ve purchased your suit, wear it around the house (with undies on) and you’ll get a feel for it.”
  • Don't Lie To The Mirror: Trust your instinct. Are you ‘trying to make it work’ or does it really make you feel good? If the bikini doesn’t make you feel good in it - it will sit in your drawer and never get worn! says Erin.
  • Take Care of Your Cossie: Swimwear can last up to one year but it really depends on how you care for your swimmers. “If you don’t look after them, the elastic will stretch out of shape and fabric can go mouldy. When either of those things happen the only place for your suit is in the bin,” urges Caroline.
  • Seek Out Secret Panels: Sounds all very James Bond, but there are some amazingly deft designs that contain hidden panels and seams, inserts and double-fabric to fill you out where needed, and cinch you in where not. Big W has a ‘Hold ME Tight’ range, which incorporates slimming panels and four different options to wear them.
  • Take A Selfie: You don’t have to post it – no really, you don’t! – But getting someone else’s perspective before you purchase is always a smart move.

Thankyou for such great article. All points are so considerable. Whether you are buying a bikini for pool-side party or for beach vacation, getting a perfect bikini is tough task. Try variants of it on a online website or a local store where you can try them. If it is not well-fitted or not comfortable don't go for it so soon, try harder to find a perfect one & you'll surely get it.

Thank you for this article that will be very useful next time i'll buy a swimsuit! I agree that we should not follow strictly the size on the tag. I usually order my swimwear on http://www.surania.com/en-au/ because this e-boutique allows you to design and choose your size. As my size is not the same for the top and the bottom, this website became the only place where i buy my bikinis! I truly recommend it!
