Hairdresser Stevie Corthine from Stevie English Hair talks us through some of the hottest celebrity looks for summer.
Want sexy summer hair like Blake, Jaime & Alexa? The key to the season’s best looks is low maintenance and high glamour.
Easy-to-maintain colours with less visible regrowth, a good haircut that will lend itself to several looks, and a few simple styling products and techniques should get you through the warmer months with style.
Blonde is obviously the colour of choice for beach loving ladies, but the good news is there are many variations and different ways to individualise your colour. Golden and honey blondes are easier to maintain than ash and whiter shades, and the warmer colours work with most skin tones.
Balayage is still big news, and this technique creates a more natural, blended colour with less visible regrowth. The roots are always slightly darker, gradually getting lighter at the ends to create a natural, sun-kissed look like Gisele has been rocking on the beach recently.
Balayage also works with shorter styles, and a great example of this is Alexa Chung’s blunt, messy, bended bob (see Gallery below). The key to this colour is subtlety, to avoid a dip-dye disaster.
A simple way to add some fun colour to your summer hair is to tone the ends of your hair in a pastel shade like pink or lilac. Your hairdresser can mix up some coloured conditioner for you to take home for touch-ups, so you can maintain your candy colour as it fades. Strawberry blonde and light copper shades will brighten up a pale blonde colour for summer. Salt water and sunshine are notoriously bad for coloured hair, as salt is an abrasive and will strip colour.
Protect you hair at the beach by slicking hair back with a treatment like O&M’s Seven Day Miracle before swimming.
Summer hair should be loose, sexy, and fun. The quickest way to get Blake Lively’s relaxed waves is to plait your hair while it is wet, go to bed, then take it out when you wake up, spritz on some sea salt spray like O&M’s Surf Bomb for texture, then go!
The plait is also a great style for day or night, it lends a simple understated glamour to a sparkly cocktail dress or a loose maxi. Our girl Blake has worked the red carpet in her signature sexy gowns and a messy fishbone plait, for that ‘perfect-without-really-trying’ look.
After a day at the beach, nature has already provided the styling product through the salty air and water, so don’t bother washing your hair and spending ages blowdrying it before you go out. Dust on some root-life powder to the roots of your hair, hang your head upside down and gently tousle your hair to get a bit of volume. Scrunch your hair in your hands with a few drops of finishing oil like O&M Frizzy Logic, flick your head back and make the final adjustments. Alexa is the queen of the messily styled hair, it’s carefree and chic. Dead-straight ironed hair is OUT, sexy bedheads are IN.
For a slightly more sophisticated eveing style, try the tucked-under faux bob like Jaime King wore to an event in LA last week. Brush your hair with some frizz-reducing serum, pin the ends up and under, let loose a few stands at the front, and you have the perfect style for a day at the races or and evening at the bar.
