Go For Glow

While Dita Von Teese and Kelly Osbourne work alabaster white skin, summer is all about the faux but fabulous “super tan”. Nobody in beauty, of course, is neglecting their SPF protection to achieve this look. Make-up artists at shows like Jasper Conran and Oscar de la Renta know how a bronzed look can give clothes an extra “wow factor”, so they create deep, dark goddess model looks in minutes with the power of bronzing make-up.

While last season we accentuated bronze looks with shock neon eyes or lips, this summer’s colour palette to complement the super-tan bronze is all about earthy tones of terracotta, brown, gold and amber.

Shun those sun rays for your make-up bag and bring on the bronzer.

BEST FOR: Pale skin
Yes, even fair skin can achieve a gorgeous golden glow. The trick is not to go overboard with the colour. Start with a tinted moisturiser to add instant warmth to your complexion, then replace your usual blusher with a bronzer that has warm pinkish tones. Finish off with a slick of bronze lip balm, which will give you a softer look than a lipstick or gloss.

TOP EXPERT TIP: "When it comes to bronzing, the future is not orange," says make-up artist Sharon Dowsett. "Use the biggest brush you have and then shake off excess powder. For a fresh, modern look sweep bronzer on the cheeks in place of blusher and highlight with metallic eyes."

TRY: The Body Shop Tinted Glow Enhancer, $25.95; L'Oreal Paris Body Expertise NutriSummer, $15.95.

BEST FOR: Medium to olive skin
This look has golden goddess written all over it. A bronzing moisturiser will give you that all-important glamorous base.
Work in rich burnt bronzes and golds on your eyes and cheeks to intensify your summer bling look. Lips can go deep terracotta but avoid shimmer overload by keeping them matte with a lipstick.

TOP EXPERT TIP: "The best bronzers are ones that contain a combination of different tones and textures," says Nicolas Degennes, artistic director for Givenchy. "If the bronzer is textured with golden/coppery and matte textures, use them separately. Use the shiny textures in the areas you want to accentuate, such as the cheekbones and eyes, and the matte textures are best for an even and shine-free look all around the face."

TRY: Bobbi Brown All OVer Bronzing Gel SPF 15 in Desert Sun, $50; Napoleon Perdis Gilty Pleasures Bronze Bonanza Limited Edition, $55.

BEST FOR: Dark skin
Think matte to achieve this rich supertan shade. Forget the gleaming tints and apply a sheen-free tinted gel for an all-over deep tan. To achieve a healthy, natural-looking glow, as seen on the catwalks, warm up cheeks with a red-toned blush and maximise your glow with a shimmering lip gloss that contains gold flecks.

TOP EXPERT TIP: "The T-zone can get particularly shiny as it produces more oil than other areas," says make-up artist Lauren Luke. "To help eliminate this problem use a blush brush and sweep bronzer along the forehead, nose and mouth area. Skin will be with an sexy bronzed sheen... and oil-free!"

TRY: Mystic Tan Sunless Tanning Lotion, $62.00; California Tan Tinted Self Tanner Lotion, $41.99.
