Brows, lashes, eyeshadow - get eyes that will turn heads and score free drinks at the bar this weekend.
Emily Taylor, marie claire associate editor – fashion & beauty, helps you create catwalk-worthy eyes with these tips from the marie claire Beauty Workshop at the L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
1. Boost brow know-how
Never forget your arches – they serve to frame your face. Instead of encouraging them to arc upwards in the middle (something that will "age" your look – remember "what goes up, must come down) try to create a flatter, fuller line that tapers naturally towards the end for more flattering results. Apply brow pencil with light, feathery strokes to add definition.
2. Tailor your eye shadow
Not sure what shade to select for everyday wear when it comes to your eyes? Here are the basics:
• If your eyes are blue, enhance them with blue tones or add intensity with orange-based colours like bronze, gold, apricot and peach.
• If you have green eyes, pair with green or make them "pop" using violet shades
• Brown eyes suit virtually all colours, but are especially enhanced with blue-tinged tones like charcoal, grey, silver and navy.
• All too hard? Brown is a neutral colour, so, when in doubt, use it to complement all eye colours.
3. Master metallics
High-shine make-up is a huge trend this season, and what better way to update the sexy, smoky eye than with metallic hues. If you normally wear silver jewellery, pick silver-grey tones or if gold accessories are your preference, go with gold shadow, too. If a full-on eye look is not for you, use just a hint of metallic shadow in the inner corner of each eye for a wide-eyed, fresh effect, or dab a small amount on the centre of each lid to catch the light and enhance your eye shape. Alternatively, apply with a small brush as you would an eyeliner for a soft, sultry look.
4. Make mascara matter
Different mascaras create different results and there's one out there to suit every look. If you're creating an intense eye for a big night, select a volumising formula and use two coats to really anchor your look and add drama. If, however, you're going to wear a bright lip, add just one thin coat of a lengthening option to top lashes only for a hint of definition. And remember to curl your lashes first with an eyelash curler for a gorgeous effect.
