Essential Styling Tips for Spring Racing

Need help working out your races outift?

Julie Baker, buying controller for eQUIP, gives us her style tips for the Spring Racing Carnival with everything from dresses, to jewellery and the all important headwear.

Follow these great tips and all you’ll have to worry about on the day is which horse to back.

1. Headwear is essential

Whether it’s a hat, fascinator, headband or hair clip, headwear is a must when it comes to dressing for the Spring Racing Carnival.

When choosing headwear, consider experimenting with different hairstyles to figure out what works with certain styles for example some fascinators look great with a slick ponytail or low bun, while others are more suited to loose waves. For a chic on trend look, wear a chignon bun with a pillbox fascinator.

2. Be wary of the dress code

Certain race days have specific dress codes, so make sure you research before you head trackside.

Derby Day is traditionally black and white so for an on-trend look go for a white peplum dress with a chic black fascinator. Oaks Day is all about the ladies so embrace your feminine side with a floaty floral dress. Melbourne Cup is a great excuse to have fun with fashion, so opt for bright colours and prints!

3. Be practical

A day at the races is usually a long one, so make sure you’re prepared for it! Wear wedges or a pair of shoes with a thicker heel. This means you won’t sink into the grass and will be a lot more comfortable, ensuring your heels stay on your feet where they belong! Also, if you’re wearing brand new shoes, try wearing them in beforehand to avoid pop up blisters on the day.

4. Create a race-day survival kit

Pack essentials such as band aids, bobby pins for fly aways, a camera to capture your wins, a little bottle of perfume and of course, lipstick to help your pout last all day long. Perfect for quick fixes and touch ups, be sure to have these handy in your clutch!

5. Don’t forget the finishing touches

Although race-day fashion does tend to have a focus on headwear, don’t forget to use other accessories to complete your outfit. A sparkly cocktail ring teamed with a bright mani might be all you need to keep your look polished and pulled together. Finally, don’t forget to add a fabulous pair of sunglasses!
