Erika Heynatz has long graced our screens and stages as an actress and performer.
She was the original host of Australia's Next Top Model, but you may have caught her more recently as a central character on Home and Away.
On top of her exhaustive filming commitments, in December last year, Erika, 41, gave birth to her first child - a son named Charlie.
Not long after giving birth Erika was straight back into the physically exhausting task of rehearsing for the Australian stage production of Singing in the Rain. (Yes, she is also a phenomenal singer!)
We spoke to Erika about juggling work life and parenting, as well as her tips for staying fit and healthy when you have almost no time to yourself!
What has been your best experience of motherhood so far?
Going back to work for the first day with Charlie in tow and pretty much everything going wrong -feeling absolutely strung out and exhausted - then being rewarded with hearing his first big fat belly laugh. Huge and gurgling. Such instant and overwhelming joy that wiped every other worry away.
What was the biggest struggle getting back to the pre-baby body, if that was a goal for you?
I’m still struggling to regain my core strength after having a baby, and I need to do much more by way of pilates to feel strong again.
What are your main tips for new mums who want to stay fit and healthy while also managing a family and work?
Try and set aside up to half an hour of gentle exercise each day, whether that be stretching, yoga or a walk around the block after work. Starting the day with some fresh air makes the world of difference to your head space and also your energy levels.
If you need to, get a meal service, such as Eat Fit Food, for a few days to get on top of things and take the chore of cooking out of the equation. For me, my first weeks back at work were brutal hours and getting to the shops was impossible. Healthy eating was essential for my survival and to make sure I could keep up with my breastfeeding schedule.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner…what’s the best piece of advice your mum gave to you?
To enjoy discovering things all over again with my child, sharing every wonder in the world.
Line-caught fish with lemon & BBQ broccolini, eggplant & corn.
Favourite snack food?
A handful of brazil nuts, inca berries, goji berries, almonds and figs.
A fresh vegetable juice in the morning with natural Metamucil 100% psyllium fibre helps me feel lighter and more active!
Favourite form of exercise?
I’m a big fan of yoga. It’s a great way to relax and reduce stress. It’s also a great form of exercise.
Favourite activity to do with your son?
Walking in the park with him in my Ergo baby. I can tell he feels as if it’s him doing the walking, and we both have our hands free to touch and explore plants and textures of everything we see along the way.
Favourite activity to do without your son?
Go to the movies.
