Dance Moms Down Under: Search for Australia's Best Dancer

Abby Lee and her dance family recently headed down under amid a flurry of drama and sequin-tossing. During her travels, Abby conducted master classes across the country, in search of Australia's best dancers.

Wonder what it's really like to be taken through your paces by the one-and-only Abby Lee Miller? Aussie dancer Max Simmons, got the chance to experience this firsthand during Abby's trip down under.

How would you describe the experience of being on Dance Moms?

I was so nervous! I froze! I really was a wreck! But then when I was in the car with my mum, I was just so excited. I started freaking out.

Was Abby as you expected her to be?

I was so nervous in the morning because I didn’t know what was going to happen, but Abby ended up being friendlier than I expected. She didn’t correct me the things I thought she would correct me on.

What did the workshops involve?

Well the workshop I went to, to get me into the Melbourne finals was just a master class. They chose the top 30 where you had to sing and then do a gymnastics trick to get through the next round.

Max, have you always been a fan of Abby?

Definitely. Since I was seven I started watching Dance Moms and I would always try and copy the moves. I've always been such a fan of the show.

Who do you enjoy watching the most?

I really like all of the dancers, but if I had to choose one, I would probably say Maddie (Ziegler). Maddie gives the most face, and she's the most entertaining to watch. She's also got great technique, but can also hit things hard. Out of the mothers I would say Jill, as I feel like she's the funniest of the group.

Has dance always been your passion?

Definitely. I started when I was just three at a little dance studio. Then, it was just a little hobby. At school I started doing ballet classes because they offered them, and ended up loving it so much. When I found that I wasn't improving very much, I went to Brent Street Studios where I've been for the last five years.

What's your ultimate dream in the dance world?

I'd love to win So You Think You Can Dance or a major competition like that. Otherwise I'd love to be performing on Broadway in New York!

Dance Moms airs exclusively to LifeStyle YOU, Mondays at 8.30pm. Be sure to check out the Australian episodes!
