Model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen says it is her dream to have a big family.
She and her partner of five years, musician John Legend, are expecting their first child to arrive some time in the coming months, however the road to get there wasn't easy for the couple.
Chrissy and John underwent IVF to conceive - and, apparently, the couple wanted a baby girl.
"Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, 'Let's put in the girl.'" She told PEOPLE.
"I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me. It excited me to see...just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond."
However, Chrissy knows all too well the kind of backlash celebrity mothers face - and not everyone was kind about the model mum choosing her baby's gender.
In a since-deleted Tweet, one user wrote: "Did you choose the hair and the eye color too @chrissyteigen....smh messing with the natural blessings from God. I liked you a lot."
Another called her a "stupid b***h", and said she maybe Chrissy "wasn't supposed to have a kid."
Chrissy responded sharply, explaining her "blessing from God" was "infertility". (BOOM!) She went on to say she is always happy to talk about infertility, but wasn't expecting the controversial reaction to her comments about selecting the gender.
This is all so interesting. I said it so casually because i'm just open. I'm around so many open-minded people & forgot it's controversial.— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
Chrissy told PEOPLE being in the public eye has been hard during pregnancy.
“I’m not going to do that photo of my little girl in the car seat because I don’t want people being like, ‘You did that car seat wrong,’ ” Teigen said. “I can’t imagine being the kind of mother [to] judge somebody’s parenting so I am going to try to avoid even reading things like that because it can get so bonkers. For me, the toughest part will be people’s critiques of our parenting — that will be tough.”
Choosing the sex of a baby is possible through genetic screening - made possible for users of IVF.
@TravisSpates they tell you "hey, we were able to make 10 embryos. 6 girls, 4 boys. would you like to choose what goes in or do at random?"— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
Chrissy, who released a cookbook this week, hopes to have more children, and will need to undergo more rounds of IVF to do so.
