Chris Hemsworth Opens Up About Family Life

Hollywood heart-throb Chris Hemsworth talks family, fatherhood, the Australian lifestyle and the lure of travel. In this revealing interview, the down-to-earth Aussie actor says that raising a big family is "the greatest experience you can have." Cue swooning.

Melbourne-born actor Chris Hemsworth spent his childhood between the city and outback life in Bulman, Northern Territory, before the family settled in Phillip Island, Victoria. This touch of the nomadic may have shaped an actor’s disposition; all three Hemsworth boys are now successful actors in their own right.

Luke, 33, made his name on Neighbours, younger brother Liam, 25, stars in The Hunger Games, while Chris, 31, joined rival soap Home and Away and is now famous as Marvel’s Thor. “I could just as easily have become a beach bum,” jokes Chris. “Or a footballer. My mates would laugh at me when I was a teenager. Each week I had a different goal…”

To the now grown up Chris, family has become one of the guiding factors in his life. A father of three himself, he feels fortunate to have had a big brother like Luke. “He carried me on his shoulders when I was starting out in the business. He's helped me enormously over the years and without his help I doubt whether I would have succeeded as much as I have… now, several years down the road, it's been my turn to help my little brother Liam make his way in Hollywood.”

These days, middle child Chris is hot property in Tinsletown. This year sees him star in Blackhat, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he’s signed up for the Ghostbusters revamp. But with young children to look after; India Rose, 3, and twin boys, Tristan and Sasha, 1, he’s also focused on creating a work/life balance.

“I'm more conscious of leaving enough time between projects to be at home with my wife, Elsa, and our children. I'm also fortunate in that Elsa is totally supportive of me and knows that this is a very important time for me as an actor; she understands if I have to go away for three or four months. We make sure we spend as much time together as possible and I am very conscious of my responsibilities as a father,” he says, calling raising a big family “the greatest experience you can have".

“I'm having so much fun with the twins, and my wife and I are just really happy and enjoying this time in our lives. We're also planning to get back to Australia more often and make sure our children spend a lot of time there growing up. It's a beautiful place to be able to raise children and I want that to be part of their upbringing.”

Hemsworth says that fatherhood has changed him for the better: “You become a lot less selfish and you're suddenly thinking almost exclusively in terms of creating the best possible life for you wife and children.”

Part of building this life together involves his attempts to learn his wife’s native tongue, Spanish; with the kids growing up bilingual, he’ll have some learning buddies along the way. “My Spanish is so horrible that when she's angry and yelling at me in her native language, I can't understand a word and that's probably a good thing!” he laughs.

Adding another language to their skillset will be helpful for the life full of travel that Hemsworth has set out for his brood; “I think traveling and getting to know the world is very important, especially for kids.”

One generation of Hemworths have already taken over the entertainment industry: who knows what's next for their offspring!
