Actress Carrie Fisher passed away at the age of 60 on Tuesday morning after suffering a "massive" heart attack on Friday.

The actress was on a flight from London to Los Angeles when she had the heart attack and was rushed to hospital when the flight landed.

Despite her mother, Debbie Reynolds, declaring Carrie was in a "stable condition" over the weekend, she died at 8:55am on Tuesday morning, her daughter, Billie Lourd, confirmed to Variety.

Co-workers and famous fans have been quick to respond to the sad news of Carrie's passing.

The film's director, George Lucas, has released a statement saying "she will be missed by all."

"Carrie and I were friends for most of our adult lives," he wrote. "She was extremely smart; a talented actress, writer and comedienne with a very colourful personality that everybody loved."
