Hyper colour shirts, boy bands, cheesy sitcoms and those chunky high heeled sneakers… There was so much to love about the 90s – but hair and beauty trends weren’t one of them!
1. Hair extensions
Just because you weren’t born with thick, fluffy hair of varying colours and lengths didn’t mean you couldn’t have it. It didn’t matter if your ‘new hair’ looked like it belonged to a horse in a former life; dodgy two toned & crimped fiascos courtesy of Christina Aguilera, Brittany and co were where it was AT.
2. Hair butterflies
The more butterflies you had, the more on trend you were.
3. The Rachel Cut
There are far more of us that raced out to a hairdressing clutching this picture than we’d like to admit!
4. Hair thread wraps.
You begged your mum to let you get a hair wrap when you went to Bali for school holidays. Unfortunately, she let you.
5. Topsy tail.
The infomercial told us, "anyone who can make a ponytail, can Topsy Tail.” And it didn’t matter how much it hurt, we all did!
90's girls problems. When your bindi falls off half way through the school dance because you’re sweating too much.
8. Glitter on everything
Backstreet Boys was in your CD player, fairy wings were secured to your singlet, your bindi was securely in place and there was glitter on every visible piece of skin. Yep, you were ready to roll.
Teamed with a feathered fringe, you were onto a winner. Extra points if you could make it in the same fabric as your outfit.
10. Feathered fringe
All this took was a haphazard chop with feathering scissors, and secured with enough hairspray so you could bounce a brick off it. 90s sitcom Full House has a lot to answer for!
11. The twist and flick
We were like, totally jealous of Alicia Silverstone’s on trend twist and flick do. It may have taken a bit of practicing in the mirror, but was SO worth it. Teamed with butterfly clips it was absolute perfection.
12. Over-plucked eyebrows.
How many of us spent many teary-eyed hours plucking our eyebrows into oblivion trying to look like Drew Barrymore?
13. Drawn on eyebrows
And after you plucked your eyebrows into non-existence, you drew them back on with eyeliner. Don’t forget your dark plum lip liner.
14. Chunky highlights
Because they weren’t proper streaks unless they were proper two tone.
15. Frosted Tips
Remember how oh-so-dreamy and N-Sync were with their on-trend frosted tips?
Eyebrows, tongues, lips, belly buttons – didn’t matter what you pierced, you needed at least one.
