Abby Lee Miller: 10 Things You Need To Know

The straight-talking American of the hit reality series Dance Moms, has become a star in her own right. How much do you really know about Abby Lee Miller? Find out below.

She's controversial, polarising, and all about giving the tough-love! The famously outspoken Abby Lee Miller is back on LifeStyle YOU every weeknight for two new series of Dance Moms - with several new faces. Once again set in Pittsburgh's renowned Abby Lee Dance Company, Dance Moms follows children in their road to stardom and their mother's crazy antics. Before we step back into the world of competitive dance, let's test your knowledge on how much you know about the dance maven.

1. She's in the family business

Abby's late mother, Maryen Lorrain, headed up more than a few dance studios through the years and was a member of Dance Masters of America, for close to 50 years.

2. Started her own dance company at age 14

Actually terrified of the stage, Abby started her own company, the Abby Lee Dance Company at 14. Then in 1980, she grew that into her own dance studio in Pittsburgh.

3. Dance Mom Kelly Hyland was an original ALDC member

The history between these two frenemies dates back to when Kelly was only 8 years old! Kelly Hyland, mother of Paige and Brooke, was one of Abby's original Abby Lee Dance Company members. However she quit at 14 to pursue cheerleading.

4. Filed for bankruptcy prior to the show

Back in December 2010, Abby filed for bankruptcy as she owed more than $400K on real estate properties, including her dance studio. In 2011 Lifetime (the US network) gave her her big break, and she began earning back the money she needed to keep the studio.

5. Abby stole the show

Originally the show was created to follow five dancers and their involved mothers over a six week docuseries. Miller (who auditioned after the show's leads were chosen) and her Pittsburgh-based customers apparently stole the show!

6. Abby had a colourful childhood

In addition to taking dance lessons from her mother, Abby also went to Girl Scouts, had clarinet lessons, did roller skating, ice skating, had sewing lessons at Sears, took swim team in the summer and ski club in the winter and attended Charm School.

7. Abby had never used the pyramid chart, prior to the show

The pyramid chart famously shown on every episode, details who Abby feels did the best in her eyes and who needs to do some serious work. While most may think this tactic was created by Abby, it was actually thought of by the television crew. "I've never done that in my life. That has nothing to do with me. That's the show; they came up with that whole process."

8. She's a fighter

No matter what life throws at Abby, one thing's for sure....she'll come up fighting. "If I were a flower, I would be a dandelion because you can’t keep me down."

9. Her tough-love actually works

Over the years, Abby has taught close to over 4,000 students. Of these, many have made a successful transition into the world of competitive dance. Her former students have appeared in Wicked, Footloose, West Side Story and Lion King, to name a few.

10. She's body confident

She might receive a lot of flack over her larger size from Dance Mom and arch enemy Christi Lukasiak, but Abby thinks she's fabulous just as she is."Inside, I’m really a size 6 Prada."
