What do makeup artists swear by to reduce age around the eyes, boost your brow growth, and achieve the best match for foundation?
I spoke to several professionals to find out the tips and tricks of the cosmetics industry's inner circle.
Here's the scoop on what the experts choose to use when it comes to skin and face products:
Get An Eye Lift
“For women in their 40s I suggest a trick I use to ‘lift’ the outer corners of the eyes with a concealer,” Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman explains. ”You do this by dabbing a little concealer on the outer corners of eyes with your index finger, patting it in ever so gently. I personally use this trick every day, and it really makes you look better.” Go with a moisturizing concealer as well so your eye area will not dry out, she adds.
Slow & Steady Wins The Face Race
“Look for a foundation that goes on creamy and is buildable,” suggests Max Factor Makeup Artist suggests Liz Kelsh. “That way you can add more coverage where needed like on areas with pigmentation, while keeping lighter coverage in areas that are clear.”
Boost Your Brow Game
Rather than using a hard pencil, make-up artist Noni Smith suggest you brush eyebrows with an eyebrow gel - a technique she has used with Miranda Kerr. “We’ve been using the Benefit Cosmetics Brow Tint. Then I filled them in with a brow palette, blending two brown colours together so I always find the right shade.”
Laws Of Illumination
Don’t overdo it on illumination, cautions Jodie Boland, who has worked with Naomi Watts and Victoria's Secret model Doutzen Kroes. “The only place skin illuminator should be applied is on top of your cheekbones, working up and around your temples, blending it into your hairline, and fading out to nothing.”
Match your complexion products - including foundation and concealer - to the inside of your arm, not the back of the hand. This is because the inner arm is the closest to your natural colour without sun exposure, so it is a truer guide, explains Maggie Ford Danielson, Benefit Cosmetics Global Beauty Authority.
Boost Brow Growth
“Caster oil is amazing for so many different reasons and hair growth is one of them,” explains Danielle Kurukchi, Brow Specialist and Owner of Final Touch Brows. “Rub a little into your brows each night before bed to help stimulate and strengthen hair growth.”
Pick Pink Wisely
Got a penchant for pink lipstick but you’re pale skinned? Choose your hue wisely, warns celebrity make-up artist and presenter, Michael Brown. “Too blue-based shades such as plums, purples and red-based pinks can wash you out,” he says.
Adopt Smoother Moves
“Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!” urges Max Factor's Liz Kelsh. “As you age, your skin’s renewal process slows dramatically, and pores get bigger so your make-up will have a tendency to either soak up like a sponge or slide off and wear quickly. The best way to combat this is with exfoliation.”
Don't Bin The Brushes
“I always use brushes,” says Noni. “I might use a finger around the eye socket if I need to blend crème with the heat of my finger, however, I find brushes are better.”
