'80s revival: Trends to try in 2017

The fashion pack have called it; the '80s are back in a big way this year.

"We're talking kitsch, excess, experimentation, and serious glam," exclaims Joanna Willmott, Sydney-based personal shopper, stylist and founder of There Will Be Style.

While last year paid homage to the '70s, this year is a celebration of maximalism - a response to '90s minimalism. Keeping up? Simply put, in 2017, more is more. Think Studio 54 and MTV!

Back in the day, Madonna did it best. But these days, the crop top is more tailored and ends just under the rib cage. Rather than pairing a loose ripped crop T-shirt with a Ra-Ra skirt, this time around work it back with a high-waisted skirt or pant that hits above the naval, suggests Joanna. “No naval gazing and absolutely no side-boob on show please!” she pleads. Go with a capped or long sleeve.

Sleeves that would make Joan Collins positively sing are going to be voluminous with feminine ruffles everywhere. However, androgynous shoulder pad styles will also be in the spotlight. So, start saying goodbye to those off-the-shoulder summer styles ladies!

In the ‘80s, we may have been swooning over Alyssa Milano’s oversized earrings, but in the new millennium, we’re taking one off. “The single oversized earring reaching the collar bone as seen at Yves Saint Laurent is going to be a significant trend,” she points out. “Door-knocker earrings will continue strongly in 2017 and the 'horseshoe' style, made famous by ‘80s rappers Salt n Pepper, are also enjoying a reinvention," she notes.

From accessories to shapely silhouettes, here's how to do it best this decade.

DOs

  • DO pick one element from the ‘80s that suits your personal style and body shape investing in a beautiful piece, suggests Joanna.
  • "DO invest in a beautiful wide leg trouser as the style always comes back into fashion."
  • DO pay attention to your silhouette. "It’s very easy to appear a size bigger with the ‘80s aesthetic, so you need to think of proportions."
  • DO approach double denim in an acid wash with caution, Joanna advises. "Probably best to avoid the coloured denim trend. Only the very young should attempt this."

DON’Ts

  • DON’T revisit the tiny crop top paired with a micro-mini! Ever! "It wasn’t a good look then, and it is not a good look now."
  • DON’T wear every trend at once, Joanna advises. "It's very easy to border on fashion victim as opposed to having a little fashionable fun."
  • "DON’T wear big hair and over the top makeup," she quips. "This time around just a beautiful glossed lip and pretty eye is all you need for a gorgeous nod to the ‘80s."
  • DON’T do scrunchies, tutus, leg warmers, g-string active wear or swimwear. These can safely stay in the fashion vault. For now at least.
