Winter-proof your skin from the harsh elements with these 5 top tips.
Paramedical Aesthetician and Founder of You by Sia Clinics and Cosmeceutical Skincare Sia Hendry, shares her 5 top tips to maintaining a glowing complexion during the cooler months.
1. Clean your skin but don't strip it
Whether your face is naturally dry or oily, it's important to use a cleanser that performs its basic function in effectively washing away dirt, makeup and excess oil, without stripping or drying the skin of its necessary and natural oils. Ensuring your cleanser helps maintain a healthy balance within the skin means you can avoid those dry, flaky and rough patches on your face. Another point to factor in when cleansing the face during the cooler months is water temperature. It may be tempting to turn on the hot tap, but try to keep it lukewarm, as hot water combined with cold conditions can dry the skin out.
2. Nourish from within
We really are what we eat and poor skin is sometimes the result of a poor diet. Try to ensure that you eat fresh food whenever possible and avoid anything too processed or full of refined sugar. Make sure you’re drinking at least two litres of water a day to stay hydrated and to help flush out any toxins from your body. Any foods that are high in omega-3s and healthy fats such as salmon, avocado, seeds and nuts are always great additions to your diet, and can help to keep your skin looking nourished and healthy.
3. Be smart with switching up your skincare products
A seasonal change signals the time to reassess your skincare regime and make certain product switches to ensure skin is looked after appropriately as the weather transitions. Opt for high performance skincare products that multitask in tackling ageing concerns while also providing intense hydration. For added moisture, I would recommend including a slightly richer and more nourishing serum to your routine and to look for moisturisers that contain vitamin E and shea butter. If you haven’t already, invest in cosmeceutical-grade skincare products as they have advanced formulas and contain active ingredients in higher concentrations, which means they can target specific skin concerns more effectively, to deliver maximum results for a healthy, glowing complexion.
4. Treat your body to some serious pampering
Winter is by far the best time of year for steamy showers and relaxing baths. After showering, cocoon your body with a rich and hydrating body lotion – just like you would for your face. Look for a body lotion that contains the correct form of lipids so that it doesn’t just sit on the surface of the skin – rather it targets the dry skin cells from within, to replenish moisture and prevent dehydration.
5. Indulge in a facial treatment
Using quality skincare products is important on a day-to-day basis but there are times when your skin needs a little extra boost to get the glow happening. Treat yourself to a facial to help detox and rejuvenate skin for an instant refresh.
