Despite the challenges they face, the transgendered community can prove to be a great source of inspiration. Here we list 10 of the most influential transgender advocates of all time.

Here are just a few of the most notable trans people who have left, or are making a mark, on society today. 

1. Caitlyn Jenner

Formerly known as Bruce Jenner, the famous stepfather of the Kardashian clan appeared as a woman for the first time, on the June 2015 cover of US magazine Vanity Fair. The iconic cover was shot by esteemed photographer Annie Leibovitz.

2. Laverne Cox

Since playing a role in the successful series Orange is the New Black, Laverne has put her newfound celebrity status to good use. The outspoken actress is not shy of voicing her opinion and support towards the equal rights of the transgender community. 

3. Chaz Bono

Born Chastity Sun Bono to famous parents Sonny and Cher, Chaz's journey is probably considered one of the most memorable stories of all time. Coming to terms with the fact that he felt different to his peers, Chaz made the courageous step of undergoing gender reassignment from 2008 to 2010.

4. Carmen Carrera

After appearing on RuPaul's Drag Race, this trans model catapulted to reality TV fame. Carmen has appeared on various magazine covers and starred in interviews alongside other famous transgender celebrities including Laverne Cox.

5. Candis Cayne

Playing Carmelita on prime time series Dirty Sexy Money, Candis was the first transgender actress to play the role of a recurring trans character.

6. Fallon Fox

After coming out as transgender in 2013, Fallon became the first ever transgender fighter in the history of mixed martial arts. Now that's a true fighter.

7. Isis King

Another one to prove that beauty comes in all different forms, Isis became the first ever transgender contestant in America's Next Top Model history. 

8. Renee Richards

Renee made trans rights history in 1977 when she won the ability to compete in professional tennis tournaments as a woman.

9. Lana Wachowski

Alongside her brother Andy, Lana has become a well-respected name in Hollywood, producing and directing a number of films including the Matrix series and Cloud Atlas.

10. Alexis Arquette

Since identifying as a female from a young age, Alexis has always been a familiar face within the transgender community. Enjoying a variety of big screen roles as an actress, probably the one that springs to mind most is Arquette: She's My Brother, detailing her journey from male to female.

Someone who is noticeably absent from this list is Andreja Pejic.

Andreja, formerly Andrej, reached the pinnacle of the fashion world. She modeled women's couture while still a male and was (an still is) amazing.
