Shop the Trend: Mixed Metals

Metallics were predicted as a huge home trend in 2016 - and it shows no sign of slowing down.

Nowadays, you can't swing a throw rug without hitting some metal-looking decor.

However, while the trend has swayed towards copper so far, we're starting to notice a shift towards other, warmer-toned metals.

"As we make our way into spring, we will see a shift towards brass or gold," the found of Atelier Lane, Ellie Bradley, told Lifestyle.

"These metals warm up a space and the reflective surfaces bounce light around the room."

However, when styling your space, Ellie warns against using too many metallics - which can result in a space looking tacky and overdone.

Here are her tips for striking the perfect balance:

Soften and Contrast

The trick with using metallic pieces in a small space is to mix them with different, softer textures to balance them out. "I love mixing in textures like linen and contrasting luxe pieces with affordable items, such as a stunning gold-framed ornate mirror and a hemp rug," Ellie explained.

Neutral Palette

When incorporating metallics into a room, you need to keep the overall colour palette fairly neutral. "I love using brass and gold with darker colours such as black, grey, navy or deep green," Ellie said.

Mix it up

"I love mixing my metallics and it can be done to stylish effect," Ellie reassures. "But, generally speaking, you only want to use the same colour metal in different textures or finishes, such as polished brass, brushed brass and gold leaf."
