A beloved Kmart store is being forced to close its doors, leaving local shoppers heartbroken by the news.
Kmart has announced that its store in Bairnsdale, Victoria will shut after landlord of the store's building issued them with 30 days notice to vacate the premises.
The closure has shocked the 93 staff members at the store who will all be impacted by the drastic news, especially as the local Target store in the area is due to close in early 2021.
A Kmart spokesperson told 7news.com.au that they were disappointed by the enforced closure.
“Late Thursday afternoon we were informed that the lease for our Bairnsdale store will not be renewed and we were given 30 days to vacate the site,” the spokesperson said.
“We’ve been in discussion with the landlord for some time trying to renegotiate an extended lease and we’re sad to hear that the landlord had signed a new tenant to take over this space yesterday.
“Sadly, this means our lease is unexpectedly coming to an end and we will have to close our Kmart Bairnsdale store on 27 September.
“We have been part of the Bairnsdale community for many years and feel grateful to have welcomed so many friendly faces into our store over that time.
“We’ve built long-lasting friendships with the local community and are committed to being part of it well into the future.”
Kmart also confirmed that they are working hard to help staff, following the news.
"We would like to sincerely thank our team members and customers for their ongoing support over the past 15 years. It has been a pleasure welcoming you into store each day," said the spokesperson.
“We are supporting our team members to find redeployment opportunities and any team members who do end up losing their roles will receive their full entitlements.”
