Prince Harry and Prince William had one conversation that led to Harry quitting the UK and stepping down from the Royal Family, according to a new biography.
This weekend, The Times and the Sunday Times newspapers in the UK have been running extracts from Finding Freedom, the highly-anticipated book about Harry and Meghan before its release on August 11 2020.
The book is written by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand who were given permission to speak to hundreds of Harry and Megan's friends, and it's thought, after several meetings with Meghan and Harry themselves.
As a result, it's being viewed as Harry and Meghan's perspective of their relationship and ultimately why they split from the rest of the Royal Family.
When the release of Finding Freedom was first announced in May, it promised to go “beyond the headlines … dispelling the many rumours and misconceptions that plague the couple."
And the book outlines a conversation between Harry and William that first started a catalogue of events, leading to Harry and Meghan's extraordinary move to the US.
According to the book William “wanted to make sure the American actress had the right intentions”.
“After all, these are two brothers that have spent their whole lives with people trying to take advantage of them,” a source told the writers who outline the meeting.
“They’ve both developed a radar to detect that type of person, but as William didn’t know a whole lot about Meghan, he wanted to make sure Harry wasn’t blindsided by lust.”
“Don’t feel you need to rush this,” William told Harry, according to sources. “Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”
Immediately Harry was offended that his older brother was treating Meghan as if she was someone not to be trusted.
The way he referred to her as 'this girl' meant that he didn't believe Harry was deeply in love, or that Meghan's intentions were necessarily true.
“Harry was p***ed off,” another source says in the book. “P***ed off that his brother would ask such a thing. Some felt it was an over-reaction. But then, this sums them up as people — William, the calm and rational one, and Harry, who can’t help but take things far too personally.”
Another friend told the authors that Harry was beyond hurt saying, “Harry could see through William’s words. He was being a snob”.
According to the authors this was just one moment when Harry felt that Meghan Markle wasn't given a fair chance and it started the journey of the two deciding to quit London to live in LA with their son Archie - away from the Royal Family.
While Harry and Meghan have gone to great lengths to distance themselves from the book, saying they were nothing to do with the writing, it's known that Omid and Carolyn do have close ties to both writers and they have been given access to information about the pair before.
The book is thought to reveal more bombshell claims when it's released next month.
