The pair made the official announcement over social media that they would retire from the public eye and live between the UK and North America.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have dropped an incredible bombshell on the world, revealing that they will step away from royal duties and make the move to supporting themselves financially.
A statement, posted on the Sussex Royal Instagram, detailed the move.
"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.
"We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
"It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.
"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.
"We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex."
Online, fans have been calling the move "Megxit", and debating the potential reasons why the pair are making the move, and their future ambitions as a couple.
One Instagram user said, "Very good after all Harry is the spare and MM already has what she always wanted, the fame, the connection and most importantly the money. They should return the title of Duke and Duchess since they do not need it to live and forget about royalty. Now making money from the fame that royalty has given them is not right and morally shameful."
Another agreed, "Good for you both.. Your family is your priority...Honestly, I think Harry was fed up with it all anyway and wanted to keep his family safe...Public life and royal presentation has cost him a lot...He was born into it and now is opting out...I can respect that....Enjoy your lives together...You will still do great things AND make a difference."
But, the reactions have been mixed and opinions divided on the move, with some believing the move is "unfortunate and selfish," and Meghan is the driving force.
"Meghan got what she wanted. The fame -level of a royal without the responsibilities of one. Good luck Harry. You’ll need it," one comment read.
