Peter Maddison tells Lifestyle how he got his start in the architecture world.
Although Peter Maddison is now a well-known face thanks to being host of Grand Designs Australia, he nearly didn't take the gig and his start in the architecture industry was unconventional.
How it all began
"When I was a young person, I had no idea what an architect was, nor what they did.
"I got to the end of my secondary schooling and failed miserably. I was on the dole for quite awhile. My girlfriend's father was an architect and that led me to the idea that perhaps one day I could dream to be a draftsman.
"So began the journey of retraining myself and dreaming of being an architect. One of the best days of my life, next to finding my wife and marrying her, was getting into the architecture course and starting the very long degree that got me to be an architect.
"Since then I've loved the whole identity of being an architect. I love it today as much as the first day I got into architecture and I hope I can do it forever. I can't imagine doing anything else - apart from being a host!"
Hosting Grand Designs Australia
"I wasn't even looking to go on the show! I was approached randomly and I hadn't even heard of the show - I'd never watched an episode, but when I asked around to my friends they all encouraged me to have a go at it.
"I went to a couple of screen tests and next thing I knew I was a shortlisted entrant to become a host and it was only at that point that I thought it could happen. After final screen test I was offered the job. It took me three months to make up my mind and Foxtel went off casting for other hosts. At that point my wife said to me: 'Do you really want to do it?' And I dug deep and thought this could be a really exciting journey and let me tell you it has been."
