In pictures: Grand Designs Australia's stunning $6m Bondi home

Building your own Grand Design is always a challenge, but what if the block is wedged on a cliff in Bondi?

Brendan and Penelope dreamed of constructing a contemporary multi-tiered, multi-million dollar home, complete with infinity pool on the side of a cliff in Bondi.

With four kids under the age of 10, the family needed more space, which set them on a mission to find a bigger house in the right location.

That meant it had to be here - Sydney’s iconic beachside suburb of Bondi.

Penny put her career as a paralegal on hold to manage the home while Brendan continued work as partner in a law firm.

It took two years to find the plot, and despite its steep cliff location and difficult access via one narrow driveway, the spectacular views of Bondi sold it.

The couple wanted to bring that holiday vibe to everyday life - and they certainly captured it in the completed house.

The result is a stunning four-storey home with panoramic views of Sydney and a gorgeous infinity edge pool overlooking Bondi.

It comes with a a two car garage and lift, gym, wine cellar and a large toughened glass window for underwater viewing.

There's a floor devoted entirely to the kids with four bedrooms and study space, while the top floor serves as an epic master suite.

But such luxury, on a logistical minefield of a site, didn't come cheap.

The couple bought the block for $1.7 million and budgeted a further $2.3 million for the build.

Astoundingly, $2.3 million soon turned into $4.6 million and Brendan and Penny ended up spending over double their build budget.

"They were all choices," the couple said on going over budget. "We just wanted the house to do the block justice."
