If you want to give your bathroom an update, it doesn't have to cost the earth. Neale Whitaker shares his top hacks for simple and cost-effective things you can do to makeover this space.

"Updating a bathroom can be an expensive business and sometimes we don't want that and just want a refresh so there are ways of doing that," he explains.

Surface level

Neale says to pay attention to the smaller items you can easily swap out.

"Replacing the towels and giving yourself a whole new set can make a world of difference," he tells. "It's noticing these types of cost-effective solutions that you can change simply."

He also suggests painting over your existing tiles to change the look and feel of the bathroom - you can get a professional in or do a DIY job.

Small details

For a few more dollars, you can also consider changing the tapware.

"There's never been so much choice as there is now," Neale says. "Have a look at the new brushed metal surfaces (gun metal is my particular favourite), but there are plenty of black options around as well that will have a transformative effect."

Neale also says to consider getting rid of your shower screen if it's outdated. "Think about removing your showerscreen and creating a wet room environment," he tells.

Also, don't forget the power of adding a bit of green to the room via some great indoor plants.

Brighten up

If you can really splurge a bit, Neale advises adding a skylight to add a brightness and lightness to the space.

"See how much that changes everything around," he adds.
