Homes: Connecting spaces

Inside and out, this contemporary residence in Sydney’s leafy north-west has it all

Designed and built by Denton Homes, this contemporary home is really something special, exuding character and style. That “something special” is what the owners wanted for their family home and it’s what Denton Homes delivered. Before this house evolved, however, a complete knockdown of the previous dwelling was required as the clients, a young family, had outgrown it. “They wanted to create something special on their two-hectare property that was conducive to their lifestyle,” says David Denton of Denton Homes.

With six bedrooms and bathrooms, a powder room, and an open-plan living space that has the option of becoming one with the oversized outdoor entertaining area, this residence was taken to new heights in design and dimension. The client brief detailed a house that captured natural light. To obtain maximum results, Denton Homes manipulated the design so that it faced north-east and effectively became “sun-drenched”. “The owners wanted every corner of their home to be used,” says David. At their request there are no formal living areas. Instead, the clients wanted a usable dwelling that focused on open-plan living. It isn’t a massively oversized house but if they wanted to comfortably entertain between 50 and 80 people at one time, the house would allow it,” he adds.

A series of bi-fold doors extends from the dining area, opening up in an unusual design — a triangle formation. This design feature is David’s favourite part of the home, with the bi-fold doors offering connection. When these doors are opened up, this room inside appears unequivocally outdoors. “The connection you get is instant,” he says. This creates a closer relationship between the living spaces and outdoor entertaining areas to ensure its use in everyday family life, but also allowing the owners to entertain many guests comfortably at any one time. At the heart of the home, the sleek, sophisticated kitchen boasts an island bench with sink and an extensive range of storage options. Pendant lights suspend over the island bench, creating a warm ambience. For this chef’s corner, there was a need to be creative with the space since the owners didn’t want a big kitchen. A large-scale built-in pantry, scullery and concealed working space were all connected to the kitchen while hidden from view. Through the interesting use of materials, there’s a running theme explored throughout the home. Inspiring the design was a focus on natural products and elements.

Spotted gum was used for the floors, front door and timber beam at the front end of the house, creating a sense of continuity and flow. The warm ambience is reflected in the use of natural products including stone, timber and bamboo, combining to create a sleek, stylish environment. Natural stone was used on the floor inside and out, spanning the driveway and continuing through to the foyer and pantry. Stone was used for its versatile qualities and because it’s a tough-wearing material. The colour palette consisted of earthy patterns and greyish tones. “No bold colours were used in the interior. Instead, there was a strong use of consistent tones,” says David. The latest in-built smart house system has been integrated into this home. The owners wanted a system that incorporated and managed entertainment, lighting control and security all in one.

Outside, the adjoining swimming pool and spa forms the focal point for all outdoor entertaining spaces. It’s as though everything inside the home can be found outside, with this generous design equipped with an outdoor kitchen and bathroom, modern furniture, pizza oven and outdoor fireplace to meet every need. Key green features for the home include Low-E green-friendly glass and a 120,000-litre in-ground concrete water tank. This practical family home doubles as an entertainer’s delight. “Designing and building this dwelling was a true success because the clients absolutely loved it and still does”
says David.
