We've seen the big reveal on Grand Designs Australia, but what do the new homeowners really think about their new dream build?
Every week, Lifestyle will bring you the inside scoop on each Grand Designs Australia’s homeowner thoughts. From their favourite aspect of their home to what they’d do differently, this week we chat to Mike and Megan about their dream build in Suffolk Park, New South Wales.
Since the weather is still crisp, Mike says that his favourite spot in the house is the lounge room. "It's a really cosy space and is surrounded by rock and timber," he says. "We've been lighting the fire every night and morning, so we've got this really beautiful space where the family can sit around."
Now the home is finished, Megan loves nothing more than entertaining friends and family. "The functionality of the kitchen is something I really like and because we've lived in a caravan for the last 10 month, it's fun to have a full kitchen again," she says. "It's where we gather in the morning and where the girls come and help me sometimes in the night - I also love the timber panelling built-in booth."
Mike and Megan's lives were "suspended" while they lived in a caravan for 10 months, but surprisingly they found themselves adapting to that style of living quite well.
"It felt like we were holidaying in our own town and everything was stripped back and moved at a slower pace," Megan says. "All we had was the bare minimum to live happily and we were constantly outside and meeting other people never a dull moment - I really enjoyed living in the caravan."
As for any changes to their dream build, the pair reveal they had a lot of time to look over the plans and iron out any issues before building started so they're happy with the end result.
"I think the layout is amazing! In hindsight we could have done with maybe a bit more help or given ourselves a bit more time to build," Megan adds.
At the end of the whole process, the pair felt amazed at what they'd achieved.
"I remember feeling in awe of what Mike had desgined and built," Megan tells. "Building something from nothing, you get a sense of accomplishment. But, we're also in a little bit of shock because it's a lot of hard work."
"It is satisfying to actually walk up the drive way and see the structure and form as we wanted it to look," Mike adds.
Now the couple are looking forward to making new memories in their home. "We were in our previous home for 11 years and had three kids there so leaving that was tough," she says. "Now we have had dinner parties and birthday parties here will make this place even more special and I love knowing that we created this."
