We’ve seen the big reveal on Grand Designs Australia, but what do the new homeowners really think about their dream build?
Every week, Lifestyle will bring you the inside scoop on each Grand Designs Australia’s homeowners thoughts. From their favourite aspect of their home to what they’d do differently, this week we chat to Tony and Tania about their dream build in Lockleys, South Australia.
For Tania, and most women will agree, one of her favourite areas of the home is the incredible walk-in wardrobe.
"We built a bit of a Sex and the City-style walk in robe that we really wanted and it came out exactly the way I had imagined," she tells. "The other part I love is the back panel of the house as it looks out over the river and it's really bold and beautiful."
Tony agrees with Tania about the back of the house and reveals that the view from the back pedestrian path is a favourite of his. "It's an abstract version of the trees and branches that you see when you're looking out from the house," he explains. "This screen is the first thing the architect showed us and it's a part of the home's identity."
Tony adds that he's also really happy with the hidden doors in the house, which make the rooms seem almost invisible. "We've also got that big lsiding door, the only timber in the house, and I reckon a barn door in a fancy shed like that is pretty cool," he adds.
Despite being a very modern and industrial design, Tania reveals that it has a very homely feel. "You go down the stairs in the morning and into the back room and you've got all this beautiful light streaming in," she says. "We can see what's happening in the back area by the river and it's warm and comfortable - we're loving it."
While the couple had intended to cover up the vast windows, having lived with it open for nearly a year, they admit the are leaning toward leaving it open.
"The way it's been designed, the eaves are wide enough and the windows high enough that you only get winter sun coming through and in the summertime we're in shade so heating or cooling isn't an issue," Tony explains. "We've just been in suburbia connecting with nature."
The pair say that the only thing they had to change was going form a triple garage to a double, which isn't ideal given they own more than two cars, and now have extra space they aren't quite sure what to do with.
"We probably haven't though through how we're going to use that extra space so for now we call it the lobby," Tania says.
Tania adds that they both learned a lot from the whole experience. "We have little scars in the house, and probably in us too, that show how we pulled through," she adds. "There a few funny things like a couple of little cracks in the flooring, but they just remind us of where we've got to, so we're happy at the end of it all."
After going through a few years of building their dream home, Tony and Tania agree that when they got the keys to their castle, they breathed a sigh of relief.
"Now we just need to make the garden a bit greener and softer, and then just live in it and enjoy!" Tony says.
