Grand Designs Australia

5 reasons we're falling in love with Peter Maddison

As we get ready for another season of Grand Designs Australia to begin, we discover a few endearing truths about host, Peter Maddison.

We sit down with Peter to chat about everything from his love of surfing to love of being a handyman at home.

Family

"The most meaningful times for me is when my family and I get together whether it be for a Sunday roast, going on a holiday or just helping each other out.

"Connection with your family is what drives everything. I'm lucky becasue I have three kids (Finn, Woody and Ruby) and a very understanding wife (Andrea) and marriage and family are just about everything to me."

Surf's up

"I love surfing and have done since I was a little boy. I love that you are totally at the mercy of nature and you can connect with it naturally - there's no engines or  mechanical devices out there it's just you and the pulse of the ocean.

"This connection helps ground me and makes me very humble. It's a very cathartic experience - I'd recommend it to anybody."

Handyman

"On the weekend I put on a pair of beige overalls and disappear into my little shed, which is about 3x2 metres, that's jampacked full of tools, drills and various other bits of equipment.

"I have a bench of my wife's great-grandfathers with two big vices on it and I tinker. I love fixing stuff whether it be things that are broken or just doing handyman jobs aroudn the house. I think there's a place in everyone's life for taking control of their own environment and I just love doing pottering around doing my own thing."

Spare time

"When I have a moment to myself, which is not very often, I like to go down to the beach and throw myself into the ocean. It doesn't matter what the temperature is, with no wetsuit, and it's a bracing experience that's so invigorating it takes all the pressures of your day-to-day life away and enables you to focus on what really matters."

Neat and tidy

"I have this thing around being tidy and clean and it drives my wife nuts!

"If I see a leaf on the floor I can't help but pick it up and if I'm walking down the street and there's a bit of rubbish I'll pick it up.

"So, I do have a bit of a compulsion around keep the world and my own environment neat and tidy - don't tell anyone!"
