Getting Your Home Ready for Moving Day

After you sell your home or decide to switch apartments, getting your things in order to move can be quite a challenge. In addition to all of the other details, packing everything up to move is one of the most time consuming and arduous tasks. The tips below will help you stay organized and get your home ready for moving day in no time at all.

Boxes Are Key

The key to easy moving is to have proper sized boxes. Sure, you can get boxes of all shapes and sizes from the grocery store or your office, but when you pack with those types of boxes, it can be a lot more challenging. Think of boxes as the keys to your organization. If you have sturdy boxes in the right size, you can keep items together that belong in the same room. There is nothing worse than having nine small boxes filled with knick-knacks from the living room and not knowing exactly what is in each. One larger box will make packing and unpacking a lot easier. Invest in good-size, strong boxes to make the most of your packing chores.

Room-by-Room

After you have boxes, start going through each room. While you may not be able to pack everything right away, you can make a good dent in the items that are in each room. Start by packing the things that are rarely used and are hidden away in drawers and cabinets. Instead of just putting things right in the box, decide if you really want to keep the items. You may find that your packing goes a lot quicker when you decide to donate some of the clutter that has accumulated in your home. After all, you do not want to take the clutter with you to your new house! Have a donate pile in each room and make a call to a local charity to come and get the items a few times during the packing process.

Labeling

It is great to have everything packed away neatly and carefully in your sturdy moving boxes, but if you do not take the time to label the box with what is inside, all is for naught. Make a detailed list, or take a picture, of the items that are in each box. Put a copy inside the box, and then put another copy on the outside. Also be sure to mark the room where the box will be going. For example, if you have books from your old living room that will be going to your new den, be sure to label the box “Den” and not “Living Room.”

Getting your home ready for moving day is easy when you are organized and methodical about how you attack the packing process. It will not be done overnight, but it can be accomplished quickly when you take the time to do it right. You will be so much happier when you arrive at your new home to find that unpacking is a breeze.
