Peter Maddison takes us behind the scenes on Grand Designs Australia.

Grand Designs Australia season eight dishes up some of the most extreme builds ever featured on the series. Here, host Peter Maddison takes us through some extra insights from this week’s episode: Craig and Barbara, Dee Why, New South Wales.

New invention

"Craig is an inventor and he tried to create a whole new building system, but it wasn't that easy. He wanted to patent the idea but then realised similar systems already existed."

Modern design

"It's quite a heavy and bulky design and it's all about area and size.

"The place has a great view out over Dee Why and Craig and Barbara have really taken advantage of the location."

Things to learn

"From the experience, there are a few things potential builders can take away - number one being establshing rules of engagement when going about a project like this.

"Craig was pleased to have it all behind him. It cost him a lot more and took longer than he thought and it affected him physically."
