Peter Maddison takes us behind the scenes on Grand Designs Australia.
Grand Designs Australia season eight dishes up some of the most extreme builds ever featured on the series. Here, host Peter Maddison takes us through some extra insights from this week's episode: Maugan and Lori in Elsternwick, Victoria.
"The overall composition is the result of an architect looking in the local area and asking what the core hallmarks are of that suburb.
"It's very clever - like a village that's been built, not one house. The scale of it is kind of broken into discrete parts even though it's a family home.
"I think that was an interesting part on the part of the architect Andrew Maynard to come up with that and Lori and Maugan held onto that concept although they had to make some decisions about where they were going to spend their money."
"There were certain elements that were non-negotiable for the couple such as the plunge pool and car stacker.
"They wanted fun features too, like the trapeze netting. The pair have a strong focus on family and they have dedicated the whole upstairs level to the kids.
"What I like about the void with the trapeze net is that you can talk to the people upstairs. Unlike most double-story homes, having this feature means you're not cut off in any way; there's a visual and aural communication that you can have in the house."
"Maugan and Lori's build came in just three months under estimated completion time, mostly because they had good drawings and a cost plan.
"Having these things means you aren't going to have delays and hold ups - they had a budget and knew where they were going with it, along with an experienced builder.
