The surprising reasons watching TV is good for your pet

There's nothing better than settling in to watch a good movie or your favourite TV show - and your pet thinks so too!

Ever watched your furry friend get excited about seeing another pooch on TV (or any animal for that matter), or wondered if they're actually enjoying that movie you love so much? Well, veterinarian Dr Kate Adams has revealed some surprising home truths about the benefits of pets watching TV.

"Pet’s actually love watching movies, especially those like the Secret Life of Pets 2, that have another dog or cat on-screen. I often hear of dogs – especially puppies, barking or pawing at the TV and that’s because they often identify with other animals they see or hear on TV – almost as well as they would in real life," she explains.

Apart from sheer enjoyment, Dr Adams outlines a few other reasons a bit of TV time is great for our pets:

Keeping them stimulated

"Watching movies or leaving the TV on when you aren’t at home is a great way to keep your dog mentally stimulated and even reduce anxiety and boredom," Dr Adams explains. "Pets love being transported away virtually into another world and it keeps them out of trouble and mentally stimulated. I know cats that will watch mouse videos for hours."

Bonding time

While we relax watching the screen, it's also a great time to bond with your pet.

"They get pats and cuddles as well as hanging out with their favourite people," Dr Adams says.

They love what we love

"Our pets learn to love TV by watching us love TV! If they see you laugh for example, they will feel happy or excited with you. If you’re relaxed, they’ll feel equally at peace," she says.

So, if you want to leave the TV on when you're not at home for some company for your pet, pop on something you'd actually watch - chances are your pet will love it too, Dr Adams tells.

Kids shows win

"Dogs in particular absolutely love watching other dogs on screen, but actually it’s thought they also love kids shows and cartoons," Dr Adams reveals.

Since these programs often use softer, more high pitched, gentler voices - much like how we talk to our pets - these shows can be more comforting.

Secret Life of Pets 2 is now on digital and will be available for you to own on 4K Ultra HD, DVD and Blu-ray
