Dr Anthony Bennett and Dr James Carroll of Village Vets Australia, talk about the eighth episode of Series 2.
This episode is all about endings and beginnings – because you can’t really have one without the other!!
It’s our last episode for this series – and what better way to end than with the birth of Zoe Carroll, James and Ronnie’s second child. Bringing a new person into the world is always a wonderful time (yes, even though it means sleepless nights and full nappies!) and reminds us all that there is more to life than work. Having said that – the work never stops!!
In some small vet practices it’s just you ... and every animal in the district – so you’re on call 24 hours a day. Animals don’t care too much for a ‘9 to 5’ existence – they’ll get sick or injured any time of the day, and being a vet means you have to be ready. We are lucky in our Berry practice – there are a few of us to share the work around.
When we were called out at the end of a long day to tend to just Dylan the racehorse, we knew we wouldn’t be home until long after the sun had gone down – luckily, in JD’s case, after checking him and administering pain killers and anti-inflammatories, we knew we could re-check him in the morning. Often though, we will spend much of the night driving into the clinic to check on sick and injured animals. It’s what we signed up for as vets, and what our spouses signed up for when they said ‘yes’ ... and baby Zoe will get used to daddy heading out at all hours of the night to tend animals – just like her brother Charlie is already learning.
