If you’ve been thinking about welcoming a four-legged friend into your family, you’re in luck! Over the next three days you can adopt a pet from the RSPCA for just $29.
Starting on February 21, the RSPCA will be launching their ‘Clear the Shelters’ campaign with the aim of finding loving homes for the thousands of animals in shelters across the country.
Dogs, cats, kittens and puppies will be up for adoption, along with bunnies, guinea pigs, ducks and chickens. Even Charlie the Miniature Horse, Sheepy the sheep and Kevin the Great Dane are all looking for their forever home.
Bronson is just one of the dogs looking for a new owner.
“We want to get pets out of the shelter and into their new homes as quickly as possible, so this is a win for the animal and a win for anyone wanting to adopt a new pet - and that’s a great outcome for us,” RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil said.
On average, 100 animals enter an RSPCA shelter in Australia every day, with some having been in a shelter for more than 100 days.
While the adoption price has been discounted, prospective new pet parents will need to go through the usual adoption procedures. This includes a one-on-one interviews to help match each family with their perfect pet.
All animals up for adoption have been desexed, vaccinated and microchipped and have had all the required vet checks. Every adopter will receive an animal health check card containing up-to-date information on the pet’s parasite control and vaccination history.

So how do you get started? While you will need to visit a shelter to go through the adoption process, the RSCPA recommends registering beforehand and viewing the adoptive pets available in your area on their website.
If you spot the perfect furbaby for you, be sure to get in quick. Last year’s Clear the Shelters weekend saw 90 percent of animals at RSPCA centres find loving homes, including 700 in NSW alone.
