She’s known for her quick wit and hilarious gags, but Rebel Wilson’s latest Instagram video doesn’t have anyone laughing.
The 40-year-old comedian, who is currently on a mission to eat healthily and exercise daily, has come under fire for her latest workout video.
Trying to get down to her goal weight of 75kg, Rebel has been posting pictures of her impressive weight-loss journey to her 8 million strong followers. But her latest post has landed her in hot water.
The Pitch Perfect star posted a video to her Instagram page of herself using a 15kg Wombat as a weight to do squats during a recent visit to Sydney Zoo.
“Wombat squats! Thanks to the team @thesydneyzoo for organizing this fun workout and education sesh about some amazing rescue animals,” the actress shared.
While some of her fans saw the funny side, animal activists have criticised her choice to replace weights with a wombat.
“We are disappointed to see Rebel Wilson handling Australian wildlife with such disregard for their wellbeing,” World Animal Protection Executive director, Simone Clarke said.
“Wombats are not a photo prop or plaything; they are sentient beings, and experience distress when handled by humans.
“It’s appalling that Sydney Zoo endorse this type of promotion – quite frankly they should know better.”
Now, Rebel has responded by removing the video from her Instagram account.
Okay I am going off social media - like starting from now - but did have to show you guys stuff from my day @thesydneyzoo where @jonocastanoacero and I were the ‘testers’ for their new Meerkat Encounter and Red Panda Encounter - so much fun and cuteness! Thanks D for organizing ??
She was invited to Sydney Zoo to test the new Meerkat Encounter and Red Panda Encounter with her friend and fitness trainer Jono Castano.
“…I did have to show you guys stuff from my day @thesydneyzoo where @jonocastanoacero and I were the ‘testers’ for their new Meerkat Encounter and Red Panda Encounter - so much fun and cuteness! Thanks for organizing,” she posted alongside images of her in the enclosures.
At the start of 2020, Rebel declared she was having a ‘year of health’ vowing to kick her poor eating habits and get on a healthy living and exercise plan.
“I'll be honest with you guys - with my 'Year of Health' mission I'm trying to get to 75kg's and career wise am trying to get one of my movies into production before the end of the year," she wrote.
"Both of these things are requiring a daily effort and there’s constant setbacks - but I’m working hard."
So far, she has had impressive weight-loss and is thought to have lost more then 25kg. Her aim is to reach her goal weight of 75kg by the end of the year.
