The former Bake Off judge admitted earlier this week that she has never had a takeaway meal!
In an interview with My Weekly magazine, promoting her BBC show, Best Home Cook, Mary Berry stated that, at 84 years of age, she has never indulged in some weeknight takeaway food.
At no point has she come home, exhausted from a tough day making cakes with the Duchess or judging soggy bottoms and just said: "sod it, I'm ordering a pizza!"
"I have never had a takeaway. Why should I? I can muster up things very quickly," she says. Mary likes to cut corners using some prepared items available at the grocery store.
"There are many things that you can buy to help you if you are busy and which don't cost that much extra, like grated cheese. If you are in a hurry you can pay a little bit more for it and get food on the table quicker."
Mary believes that the UK has become far too dependent on takeaway food. She hopes that her part in encouraging people to learn to cook will counteract that trend. "We want to get people cooking at home, because we are a nation that orders in and eats out."
Mary Berry's takeaway news has been met with some negative reactions, and even doubt that she is telling the truth:
So apparently Mary Berry has never had a takeaway... This fake news is getting out of control!!— kirsty Mains (@klmains) January 22, 2020
The revelation has hit Britain hard, and even takeaway services have felt they needed to weigh in on the issue. Joe Groves, a spokesperson from Deliveroo, said: “We would like Mary to know that takeaway does not have to mean kebab or burger — we’d love to sort her out with a meal from one of our gourmet partners.”
Although, if she has indeed hit years 84 without ordering in a curry or a burrito, it's pretty unlikely she's going to start now.
