We all assume we know Nigella Lawson. She’s the culinary queen who’s shown us the best way to make decadent brownies and have an appreciation for all types of foods many never knew existed.
But she’s dealt with some tough situations in her time. Namely, her public divorce from art collector, Charles Saatchi.
Now, six years on from her high-profile split, she says she’s ‘surprised’ to have come out the other side feeling happy.
“[It] really does surprise me, because I didn’t think [happiness] was one of my gifts,” she told The Guardian.
Reflecting on 2014, just six months after her divorce, she never thought she’d be as happy as she is six years on.
“I’m not sure I would have thought I’d be a mended person, which I am,” she says.
Nigella was married to Charles for 10 years, before photographs surfaced of the couple arguing with his hands appearing to be around her throat. She ended their marriage a month later.
The court case that followed brought more controversy for the couple.
Their former assistants were accused of stealing hundred of thousands of dollars from the pair, but claimed Nigella knew of their spending asking them to keep her cocaine and prescription drug use a secret.
When Nigella took the stand, she admitted to using drugs to distract her from the destruction in her marriage, saying it made “an intolerable situation bearable”.
Looking back on the court case, Nigella now says she equipped herself with an ‘armour’ during the trial.
“That’s how I feel about everything: you plough on. It’s not a choice, it’s the person I am,” she says.
“When people say, ‘How is so-and-so coping?’ I always think, ‘How do you feel they’re coping? They’re not coping on the inside and they’re coping on the outside’.
“I know, and I used to feel, what a luxury, to not cope on the outside. I never thought I had that freedom. But now I think, maybe it’s fortunate to be the way I am.”
While she didn’t reveal whether she’s dating someone new or not, saying “I’m not answering that question,” she is looking at life a little differently these days.
After turning 60 this year, she’s focussing less on how she looks and says she’s stopped being a “ruminator”.
“I don't know if it was the calm of lockdown, or getting older, but I've stopped looking back on the past an awful lot,” she says. “I'm very happy at last.”
