A bakery has created a line of Heinz flavoured cakes

Let them eat ketchup cake?

We all know someone who slathers their pies, chips or even pasta in tomato sauce, but cake?!

Hummingbird bakery, London, is helping Heinz celebrate the birthday of its founder, Henry John Heinz, with a range of limited-edition cakes inspired by the company’s most famous products.

Designed to divide opinion, you can now dig in to a cupcake that taste like tomato sauce, mayonnaise, salad cream, tomato soup or baked beans.

Heinz marketing manager Alexandra Bayet said: “When we approached the talented Hummingbird team with the idea for these amazing 150th birthday cakes, they immediately saw the potential… They went away and created these incredible cupcakes – some of which shouldn’t work, but somehow do.”

Unfortunately (or fortunately) the bizarre collaboration is limited to the London bakery chain, so we, here in Australia, will not have the opportunity to sample the saucy desserts.

Would you be brave enough to try a salad cream cupcake? Maybe we should consider it an excuse to have a cupcake on the side of every meal! Cake is now a condiment!
