Bindi Irwin shares first photo of her surprise wedding at Australia Zoo

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell have tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on the grounds of Australia Zoo.

Sharing the first picture of her special day on Instagram, the 21-year-old TV personality and conservationist said it was a “beautiful day” with a small group of close family and friends.

"We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now," she wrote.

Chandler, 23, commented on her post saying: “The best day of my life. I love you so much.”

March 25th 2020 ?? We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history. Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this - stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!

The couple, who became engaged in July 2019, changed everything they had planned for over a year, bringing their celebration forward to comply with strict Covid-19 Government restrictions – which now allow no more than five people at a wedding.

Bindi, the daughter of the late Steve Irwin who died in 2006, ensured her father’s memory was included in her special day.

“Today we celebrated life and reveled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad's memory. We shared tears and smiles and love,” she wrote.

Bindi went on to explain that her family all live together at Australia Zoo, so they were fortunately able to be together for the celebration.

“Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other," she said.

In the lead up to her special day Bindi paid tribute to her father on Instagram, saying "Thank you for being my guiding light. You are always with me."
