Customers are going crazy for ALDI's latest Special Buy.
Shoppers have reported ‘appalling behaviour’, pushing and shoving as incredibly long ques of people rushed to get their hands on ALDI’s latest Special Buy.
While the popularity of ALDI’s Special Buys continues to grow, actually getting your hands on one can be tough.
ALDI’s Air-Fryer, which went on sale on September 9 caused such mayhem that customers were reportedly pushing each other out of the way with shopping trolleys just to get one.
“The absolutely disgusting behaviour of a horrid excuse of a male customer I just witnessed whom decided he should ram the lady next to me with his trolley because she wasn’t running to the middle isle holding him up from getting his air Fryer,” one woman posted on Facebook after shopping in store.
“That’s not ok! What has happened to people? It’s very sad, all over a special buy.”
And she wasn’t the only one to witness this type of behaviour. Her post had over 100 comments from other shoppers confirming they had seen the same thing.
“Like that here too. I'm recovering on my 30 Min break... Absolutely appalling behaviour here and abuse... I hate days like these as an employee,” one person responded.
“One man bomb dived over the air fryers to make sure he got one! I had my baby in his carrier and people were still a bit pushy with me too. So nuts! My first and last time lining up for the sales!” responded another.
“I've stopped going to Aldi because of this special buys frenzy,” said a third.
The big rush across stores was mainly caused by ALDI’s 16L Multifunction air-fryer which the retailer had on sale for $149.
The appliance has 10 preset program functions and can be used as a rotisserie, oven and dehydrator,
Also on top of shoppers' lists was the Pastry Maker – ALDI’s version of the Kmart Sausage Roll maker, the Smart Wi-Fi 3L Thermo Cooker – a cheaper version of the popular Thermomix – and a Shopbox collapsible basket.
Some customers said they had lined up for hours before the store opened to be first in line to bag the bargain, after ALDI warned customers that stock would be more limited than usual.
Most shoppers said they left empty-handed with other disappointed customers saying they had lined up only to be told the store didn’t have any air-fryers in store.
“Hubby stood in line since 7.50am (7 in front of him) for the air fryer only to find they had NONE,” one woman said.
While there was a mad rush at some stores, others had a much more civilised approach, ensuring those who had lined up early were given first preference.
“Our store handed out tickets to the people lining up, hubby got the ticket & then waited in the car,” one shopper said.
“When they opened you had to go to the back store room door with your ticket & they handed you an air fryer rather than putting them out.”
"I was very impressed with Aldi. I arrived at 7:50am to find approximately 25 people in front of me. At around 8:15 a staff member came out and went down the line (in order) asking who wanted the Air Fryer," another commented.
"He took everyone’s names and told us to line up near the registers and they would be handed out. Normally it’s a sh!t fight trying to get the specials, but today it was very civilised."
Despite the popularity of the ALDI’s Air-Fryer, many questioned why you would line up for an item you can buy from another retailer at a similar price.
“Guys seriously a little bit more you can buy better air fryer, bigger capacity. I looked in Costco..they had good ones and not expensive...Aldi is not necessarily the best price.”
ALDI Australia told LifeStyle.com.au they had issued a warning to customers prior to the Special Buys sale.
"The 16L Multifunction Air Fryer and Pastry Maker has been impacted by shipping delays due to COVID-19," an ALDI spokesperson said.
"As such, the Special Buy was not available in Victoria and there was limited stock availability in stores across other states. It is never our intention to cause disappointment, therefore we informed customers about the delays via Facebook, on aldi.com.au and via in-store signage ahead of the on sale date.
"Rude or inappropriate behaviour in our stores is not tolerated. We remind everyone to shop with kindness at all times and respect our store teams and fellow shoppers."
