What Makes You Happy?

Happiness. You know it when you see it and feel it, but we all have different ideas about what it is and how to get it. Follow these top tips to heighten your happiness levels. 

New research has revealed what it is that makes Aussies happy. 

The report, commissioned by San Churro, has shown that catching up with good friends (85%), going on a date night with a partner (81%), spending quality time with family (80%), sharing a meal with friends (76%), and reconnecting with an old friend (74%) were the top things that make Australians happy.

A further 90% of Aussies concluded that there is no real substitute for meeting a family member or friend in person. It seems our obsession with social media leaves most of us searching for closer connections with people.  

While the nation is active on social media, with the average person having hundreds of facebook friends, a staggering 39% of the country is feeling more disconnected than ever - with young Australians (aged 18 - 24) feeling the isolation most heavilly. 

So, how can you increase your happiness? Here are some top tips from clinical psychologist, Dr Paula Watkins, from the Happiness Institute: 

1. Connect & come together
Your relationships are the key to happiness. Make time to be with each other and enjoy the simple things together.
2. Unplug yourself
Switch off from technology for a few hours... there is so much happiness to be had out here in the real world.
3. Practice gratitude
Cultivate happiness by appreciating all the good things in your life! Good food, good company… there is so much to be grateful for.
4. Do something new
Routine can be boring. Try something new to get the happiness mojo flowing.
5. Celebrate
Eat, drink, laugh and love. Celebrate each other and everything else that makes you happy.
6. Give to get
Generosity breeds happiness. Give a little to get happy.
7. Know thyself
Find out what it is that makes YOU truly happy, then do more of it! Simple.
8. Remember the good times
Happy memories stimulate happy hormones! Enjoy the good times to make more happy memories.
9. Flex your strengths
Do more of what makes you awesome. Happiness will follow!
10. Be here, now
Right here, right now is the moment to be happy. Soak it up and enjoy being together here & now.
