John Raymond, President of the International Coaching Federation of Australasia, answers common questions about life coaching…
What is life coaching?
Professional life coaching is an ongoing relationship that supports people in producing extraordinary results in their lives.
Through the process of coaching, you can deepen your learning, improve your performance, and enhance your quality of life. It's an action-focussed process that moves you forward, to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Coaching differs from counselling and therapy as it is focussed on the future, not on resolving past issues.
Why is it helpful to have a life coach?
Working with a life coach creates a dedicated space and time to think about life, what is important, and what you want to achieve. Many people report feeling the benefits of having a coach, who acts as a sounding board, to share ideas, talk through decisions and to offer them different perspectives. A coach’s role is to keep you focused, committed and accountable.
If you have a goal of changing something about your life, life coaching is a process that will help you make that change.
How does life coaching work?
Coaching is a partnership between you and your coach. You choose what you want to talk about, and your coach asks the right questions to help you to discover what is important, and see how your actions and choices are shaping your life.
Will life coaching work for you?
For life coaching to work for you, you need to be willing to engage, willing to share and ready to change. Are you open to ideas and new information that may lead to a different thinking and behaving? Are you ready to commit to what’s important to you? If the answer is yes, then you will benefit from the life coaching process.
