Want a body as hot as Madonna’s?
We catch up with professional dancer and the Material Girl’s personal trainer, Nicole Winhoffer, and pick her brain for insider tips and inspiration.
How did you end up becoming Madonna’s personal trainer?
Sharing a passion for dance and performance, it was a beautiful coming together! I was on Broadway and performed in Wicked, 42nd St, and Bombay Dreams. Learning discipline and focus as a dancer is key to keeping your body conditioned. During every show, I found new ways to keep my body ready for the stage.
I was on Madonna's 'Sticky and Sweet' tour helping to keep her and her dancers conditioned. Inspired by her and her dancers, I immersed myself further with kinetics, physiology and anatomy. In the fall of 2009 Madonna and I began to work together exclusively, and one year later Hard Candy Fitness was born!
Do you use a particular philosophy or approach when training your clients?
Yes. Your body and your mind are a reflection of your life. Energy is key and understanding my clients' needs is the only way I am able to develop programs that will benefit their minds and allow their bodies to get results. Work hard. There are no limits. Love yourself. And set goals. You can do anything.
We’re dying to know, how often does someone like Madonna have to work out to stay in such amazing physical condition?
We work out 6 days per week, for 2 hours a day.
Can you tell us more about Hard Candy Fitness and ‘ADDICTED TO SWEAT’?
The Addicted To Sweat programs are designed by Madonna and I and are based on the dance and toning training Madonna completes six days a week to maintain her toned and sleek body. The program used to be exclusive to Hard Candy gyms but became so popular, Hard Candy decided to expand to DVDs to share with the masses. The class has a heavy dance influence and uses unconventional methods to inspire the mind and body, developing mental and physical results. The name "Addicted to Sweat" represents the level of energy needed to get through the workout; if you aren't sweating you aren't working hard enough.
As a professional dancer and celebrity trainer, what fitness and diet guidelines do you follow yourself?
I steer clear of refined sugar. It spikes my insulin, makes me crash, and makes my thinking foggy. I also stay away from gluten and focus on lean proteins, vegetable soups, veggies - and I love avocados!
Because I am training all the time, scheduling meals and snacks is crucial. People fail to realize, that scheduling what you put INSIDE your body is JUST as important as a scheduled meeting! Water is so crucial as well!
If I’m on the go , think thin bars and other natural protein bars are in my bag of tricks!
What’s the best part of your job?
Creating and seeing the work come to life. An idea starts in the mind, and then its born - it doesn't stop there! I am able to perform and workout with my clients, and seeing all the beautiful hard candy fitness facilities opening - the world is getting a taste! From the Sydney trainers and members, to Moscow, to Chile... it’s so beautiful to be able to bring people together through movement!
What’s your best advice and inspiration for women wanting to get into shape?
JUST DO IT.
The most important person in your life is YOU.
Put you first.
When you feel good, you do good.
When you do good, you are your best for others.
Be the best you can be.
With dance and fitness, you allow your body to be free of the mind.
Blast the music and go!
