The truth about how often your clothes should really be washed - and pyjamas might surprise you!

A new guide which reveals just how often you should wash your clothes has divided opinion online.

A social post about when you should wash your clothes after wearing them sparked a lively conversation among cleaning fans, who couldn't agree on the washing timeline suggested by Which?, a consumer organisation based in the UK.

Here's our pick of  how many times you should wear clothes before you put them in the washing machine.

How often should you wash them?

Answer: After each wear

Many people seem comfortable wearing T-shirts several times without a wash, but they should be treated like underwear, since they are in close contact with your skin and often get sweaty.

You could wash your t-shirt after two wears if you have only worn it for a couple of hours, but it's usually best to throw it in the wash.

Swimsuits are basically a form of underwear. Plus, they absorb sweat and whatever is in the water so it is best to play it safe, and wash your trunks, bikinis and swimmers when you get back from the beach or pool.

Of course this depends if you are working out in your exercise tights or just wearing active wear!

If you are busy in the gym, wash them after every wear because they will absorb your sweat. If you are just wearing them around you should wash after two or three wears.

Do we really need someone to tell us this?! The exception here though is bras which should be washed every 2-3 wears, depending on how sweaty you feel you've been!

If you have a cleaning obsession this might not work for you but according to Which?, jeans don't need washing as much as other pants. Repeated washing can stretch them out, making them fit too loosely and make sure to wash them in cold water so they retain their colour.

Pyjamas totally split opinion with Which? suggesting they can be worn 3-4 times before they go in the laundry.

If it’s hot, and you sweat a lot while sleeping, you will need to wash them even every two wears Research has suggested that sleeping in dirty pyjamas can lead to acne breakouts and other skin-related issues - in the same way that sleeping in dirty sheets can have the same effect.

Social media followers were horrified with the majority agreeing that they put on a clean pair every night.

Commenting on the post, one wrote: “PJs fresh set every night!”

“Pjs are like underwear, why would you not wash them every day?” agreed another.

While others disagreed completely.

"I change my pyjamas when I change my sheets and sometimes that is every couple of weeks!" said one.

“If I’m honest I wash if it’s dirty or smells” said another, adding, “There’s no need to wash after one wear unless it’s underwear. Save the planet people.”
