Supernanny’s Separation Anxiety Technique

Separation Anxiety can be an issue for many children, making it difficult for parents to leave them at school or daycare, or when they go to work.

Here Supernanny tackles it in a few key steps:

Step 1: Do not feed the drama

By comforting your child and feeling guilty, it implies that they’re right in feeling that way – that will only fuel the problem. Do not give mixed messages. Create a boundary your child cannot come past when you leave (in this episode, Supernanny creates a black line in the driveway).

Step 2: Keep them safe

Make sure you keep them out of harm’s way as you leave.

Step 3: Issue Warning

If the child continues to cross the line, issue a warning that if they continue to pass this point, they will go into timeout.
Repeat the process, placing her in timeout until they complete their period of timeout.
