Staying in Shape When You’re Time Poor

Keep It Simple:

Including incidental exercises into your everyday routine is a great way to stay active throughout the day. You’ve heard it before but it’s the simplest way to stay in shape when you’re racing against time. Take the stairs where you can over the lift, walk to work (even if you take public transport half of the way, walk the other half) or rather than sitting on the couch during TV ad breaks, do quick sets of crunches, planks and push ups.

Make Time: Think about your to-do list. You look at it and allocate a certain time of day to do it - exercising should be no different. Set aside a time each day and stick to it. This could be going for a 10 minute run before/after work, doing yoga first thing in the morning or if you like to hit the gym look for express classes. Virgin Active offer express cycle classes which are a great cardio workout and burns a high amount of calories in a short time - it only takes 30 minutes of your day!

Eat Well: A balanced diet goes hand in hand with exercise and is important when you’re trying to stay in shape. Make sure you’re eating lots of fresh food ingredients with fruit and veg making a regular appearance and limit snacking - particularly when the 3pm sugar craving hits! Try grabbing a piece of fruit instead of the tempting chocolate bar.

Pack a Punch: If you only have 30 minutes or less a day to exercise, make the most of it by including interval training or cardio - this will get the heat rate up and help burn fat quicker. Alternatively try including some resistance training by using different weights - this will help the body work for the results even when you’ve left the gym!
