Selena Gomez revealed that she turned to professional help to deal with the negative comments over her body.
The 23-year-old singer was fat shamed after being photographed in May while wearing a bikini.
While at the time Selena hit back at her haters revealing that she was fine with her body, the Good For You singer is now revealing that she had to turn to professional help to deal with the negative comments.
Speaking to UsWeekly, Selena shared that she had "been working in therapy. I'd land at the airport and people would yell out, 'You're fat! It was awful."
This was the first time that Selena had to deal with comments over her body. "I've been working since I was seven," she shared with the publication. "Even if I did gain weight, I'm fine. That's what the picture represents."
The ex-girlfriend of Justin Bieber also opened up in the November issue of Flare about fat shaming. "I was really bummed when I found out all that stuff was going on," she shared. "And that's when I was like, 'I'm so tired of feeling like I'm being pulled down by something."
Selena insists that she has taken the experience in her stride and only grown from it. "Each year, I'm becoming more who I am," she shared with UsWeekly. "I have a little more self-awareness. I feel confident and free. I'm not going to hide in my room and be depressed."
Stripping off for the cover of her new album Revival, Selena revealed that it felt good. "Being naked is amazing."
Selena also shocked fans by revealing why she cancelled her 2013 Australian tour. The singer told Billboard Magazine she was undergoing chemotherapy to alleviate symptoms of lupus, an auto-immune disease with mild to life-threatening symptoms such as extreme fatigue, chest pain and hair loss.
"That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke," she revealed.
When media suggested she was in rehab, she wanted to hit back at reports. "I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're a**holes'," she said. "I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again."
Selena's friendship with Taylor Swift has helped her get through the tough times. “Taylor makes me feel empowered,” she said. “The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”
